Great Work!  You did it.  Over the past month thousands of you sent messages to the Governor and your legislators demanding that they stop reckless and dangerous "lame duck" legislation that would hurt our students, our schools, and our communities.  And it worked!

Early in the morning on Friday, the legislature adjourned for the year without passing the plan to create a statewide super district (Senate Bills 1358 and 6004 as introduced).  Your emails and calls brought legislators to the table to negotiate a compromise that, while it did not pass, would not have created a single, statewide district under the Governor’s authority with unlimited ability to charter schools.

Also, Senate Bill 620, the Parent Trigger Bill, failed to garner enough support to pass the House of Representatives.

In short, your efforts made the difference and our students and schools are better for it.
Our work is far from over!   Next month the Governor will begin his effort in earnest to radically change our schools.

We must stay vigilant in the coming weeks to ensure our voices continue to be heard in Lansing.  Please take time today to thank your legislators for resisting the effort to rush through the Governor’s hasty plan for our schools.  Urge them to keep listening to the people in their districts.  Tell them you don’t want your public education system dismantled.  Strong communities need strong comprehensive school districts meeting the needs of all of their students.
