MSU WEATHER BALLOON LAUNCH
CAPTURING THE SKY
-FREE PRESS STAFF
Michigan State University College of Communication Arts & Sciences (CAS) instructor Troy Hale and CAS students launched a weather balloon Thursday containing five high-definition cameras and a GPS unit.
The balloon launch is the first of many aimed at retrieving video from the “edge of space” at approximately 100,000 feet. The balloon was tracked using the onboard GPS unit, and the cameras captured the footage. The noon launch was at the Detroit/Pontiac National Weather Service Office in White Lake Township.
The video will be displayed in a future museum installation. The balloon also is to be launched from Spartan Stadium in East Lansing during the MSU football season in fall 2013.
