*NOTES:
STEM Hub Governance Meeting #1
24 Oct 12
Megan Schrauben, Jim Ross, Leo Tomko, Bill Rayl, Paul Agosta, Karl Klimek
Next Conversation is: 29 Oct 12 @ 2 pm…Same call-in numbers as today.

Random Notes:
Great conversation.  Excellent clarifying questions as to the "Big Picture" regarding the intent and current status of the STEM Partnership efforts.
$70K-$80K to hire director (including travel)
$30K per Hub for their use.

Megan:  Dept of Education and MEDC hope to see everyone working together…better…like other states are doing.  Want better efficiency throughout.

Paul:  HUB does not appear to have much organization…Needs "stuff on the wall that sticks!"…Better defined processes…What actually is STEM?  What are we agreeing the definition of it to be?

Bill:  Someone needs to have the leadership position as a part of their compensated job.

Leo:  Leader needs to be able to work out on the edge…in the forefront…show me, don't jus tell me.  Either this effort is going to be big, or nothing at all.  Are there gems within the existing organization that could assume this position?

Jim:  Why STEM at this point in time?  We need something new…"New Knowledge."

Megan:  State has set aside $100K   along with MEDC producing $250K as seed money for a star-wide position.
MDE is established as a core partner with the HUBS.  Arm-in-arm relationship.

Paul:  ready-Fire-Aim!  Without a clear message and clear targets, industry will probably not participate.

Bill:  Can help with bridging to potential industry partners.
HUB Leader could be informed/supported by a core advisory group of industry leaders.  Tight-knit group to reflect needs of industry to the leader…would then drive objectives and policy for the HUB.  Perhaps produce some recognition framework (Good Housekeeping Award).  Feels this would help lead to funding opportunities.

Megan:  Job posting for State will be out soon.  Handled through Wayne RESA.

Jim:  We need to focus on traction elements.
