Michigan NAEP Scores (Update)

Michigan students lag national average on math and reading skills tests
The results of a national exam given every two years measuring math and reading skills show that Michigan’s students are stalling while other states are seeing slight improvements.
Michigan’s scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress test, commonly known as the Nation’s Report Card, lagged behind the national average in fourth-grade reading and math as well as eighth-grade math, according to results released Thursday.
Michigan was one of 11 states where the percentage of students in both fourth and eighth grades who scored at or above proficient in math were below the national average. Michigan was the only state where the percentage of students in fourth grade who scored at or above proficient in reading was lower than the national average.
The Education Trust-Midwest, a nonpartisan research and advocacy organization, noted that Michigan now ranks in the bottom third of all states in fourth-grade reading, fourth-grade math and eighth-grade math.
“Today’s release shows the profound need for Michigan state leaders, education leaders, teachers, parents and communities to think deeply about what we are doing as a state to raise all of our students’ learning, and what we can learn from other states,” said Sarah Lenhoff, director of policy and research at the Education Trust-Midwest. See the results athttp://on.freep.com/1ho4j3d  .
