Chrysler Foundation Grants for 2014 FIRST Robotics Programs (Update: Ellen AWESOME Green!)


The Chrysler Foundation Energizes 2014 FIRST Robotics Season with Nearly a Quarter-Million Dollars in Grants

Grants will help students to ready robots for run at FIRST Robotics Championship
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Jan. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chrysler Foundation today announced grants totaling $229,000 to support FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics teams and organizations in Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ontario, Canada. The grants will enable more than 1,000 middle and high school students to discover the rewards of science and technology as they compete in the annual international robotics competition.

The Chrysler Foundations' funding announcement coincides with the official start of the 2014 FIRST Robotics' design and build season on Jan. 4. During this phase, teams have the opportunity to meet at local FIRST kickoff events to compare notes, get ideas, make friends, find mentoring teams, learn the design challenge, pick up the official parts kit, and get geared up for the exciting competition season. Last year, FIRST teams were tasked with building robots that were capable of competing in a high-tech version of disc golf.
"The FIRST program provides students with invaluable real world engineering experience," said Mark Chernoby, Senior Vice President, Engineering and Vice President - Product Committee Coordinator — Chrysler Group LLC. "We hope that by engaging students at an early age, we can provide the spark that inspires them to be future innovators and problem-solvers."

WHOOSH! (Update: Getting to the Heart of the Conundrum)

Q. & A. With Freeman Hrabowski



Freeman Hrabowski has probably done more to encourage interest in science and math among minority and low-income students than any other educator. As president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Dr. Hrabowski has turned his campus into one of the top sources of African-American postgraduate degrees in science and engineering, and he has helped develop several pioneering scholarship programs to get disadvantaged students interested in the subject and to become teachers in those fields. In 2011, he led a National Academy of Sciences study on increasing minority participation in science and technology, which recommended a series of ways to improve early childhood preparation, stimulate interest among high school students, and make college more affordable. He recently discussed some of those ideas with David Firestone of The New York Times editorial board.



The vast majority of high school graduates say they’re not interested in a career involving math or science. Why is that?
We in America tend to have an attitude that says math and science are not for most people. That comes from how we have prepared teachers. We have a way of looking at kids when they don’t seem excited about the work, or when they seem bored, or it’s taking too long to solve a problem, and the look says this: I’ll help you this year, but this is not really for you. You see math teachers going in with an attitude that says just that. We send that message whether we know it or not. Mothers tell their daughters and we tell kids in a million different ways, you’re not really a math-science person.
So it’s no surprise that students often don’t do well in the course work, which means they won’t be interested in the discipline. They’re not given a strong foundation — even going back to prekindergarten, when you have to develop thinking skills and language skills. There aren’t enough opportunities for kids to develop their curiosity. Too many parents aren’t reading to their children, which really does affect math performance. As a mathematician, one of the points I make is, if you give me a young person who can read well, I can teach her to solve word problems. But they’re not getting those strong reading and math skills through middle school, and then they can’t solve word problems.
How much of this do you think has to do with the way these courses are taught?
So much of it comes down to giving students hands-on experiences in math and science. When teachers can do that, they can make those abstract concepts come to life, so they can see the connection to what happens in real life. Without that, it’s very difficult for the child to get excited about it. And the stronger the math background of the teacher, the greater the probability that she’ll be able to use those kinds of different approaches to reach a variety of students in her classroom. Because people learn in different ways.
And yet the country still isn’t training enough science and math teachers.
We need much better prepared teachers in elementary and middle school. At those levels, typically, teachers don’t have a major in math and science in our country. The president is talking about the importance of funding for teacher training, and we’ve got agencies like the National Science Foundation who are working on it, too. We need elected officials at every level working on ways to give incentives to people to want to become science and math teachers.
One of the things we’re doing is called the Sherman Scholars Program[which gives college scholarships to promising students who agree to teach science, technology, engineering and math courses in Baltimore-area public schools]. We look for students who are very good in math and science and give them the funding and support to prepare to work in challenging schools, and particularly in middle schools. That’s really unusual to have math majors who are going to work with seventh-grade kids.
You’ve also talked a lot about the importance of role models in science and engineering, particularly for minority kids and for girls, who often don’t see themselves reflected in these professions.
Well, here’s a shocking statistic: the percentage of women majoring in computer science in America has gone down by 50 percent in the last decade. Only 18 percent of computer science majors are women, at a time when we need more people in these tech areas than ever. At U.M.B.C., we have a Center for Women in Technology, and those students serve as ambassadors, building community among women.
We need to do that at every level. We need to have kids working together in groups to support each other. You’ve heard of the same idea in Posse groups, the idea of building community at not just the college level, but in high school and middle school. It’s commonplace in athletic teams, but in math and science, we tend to make people feel like they have to compete against each other, and not help each other so much. Because if there’s a curve, they don’t trust each other enough to think they’ll get enough information from the other person, so they don’t give it out.
Even our highest achieving kids who come to U.M.B.C. will say, I don’t want to work in a group, because I don’t need anybody. We don’t teach students that you do need people in problem solving, not just in math and science but across the board. We can be more effective in problem solving when we learn to collaborate, ask good questions, explain with clarity, use the technology, and build that community in an effort to become even more proficient in the work.
It turns out that even a two-year college degree helps people more than many people expected.
That’s exactly right. I don’t think most people realize that almost half the students in higher ed start in community colleges. People of a certain age don’t really know how American, in the best sense of that word, community colleges are. And I’m speaking as the president of a research university. Community colleges often have very close ties with the corporate sector, and they have worked with companies to determine the skills that students need for certain programs.
One of the advantages of Maryland is, we do have elected officials who are investing in education at the state and local levels. People are really working to encourage communication and collaboration among governmental agencies, companies, K-12 schools, community colleges and universities at all those levels. You really need that if educators are going to understand what children need to know.
So many kids, particularly in low-income areas, are never even told what engineering is. How do you expose more minority kids to the potential of those fields?
That’s why engineering companies working with universities, and two-year institutions working with school systems, need to have professionals going into communities to talk about it. Our Maryland Business Roundtable for Education is doing exactly that. Its goal is to get companies working with universities and K-12 schools to expose kids to the possibilities, by having engineers and professionals of all types, particularly those in tech areas, going into the schools, from urban to suburban to rural areas, and having professionals tell their story. There’s nothing more powerful than hearing an engineer talk about being the first in their family to go to college. Or talking about not doing well at first and then having to really get knocked down and having to get back up.

U.S. FIRST Robitics (Update)

Robotics: The only high school sport where every kid can go pro

 FLINT - On the same day Michigan State University did battle in football with the University of Notre Dame, another game was unfolding at Kettering University in Flint.

With the focus of a quarterback at the line, senior Ben Slade of International Technical Academy in Pontiac hoped that a complex play would go as designed. The challenge: Construct a self-guided robot using designated gears, software and assorted framework that would accurately fling Frisbees into netted target slots. He and his high school teammates already had logged thousands of hours over six weeks as they applied principles of math, engineering and computer programming to the task.

Slade, 17, said it is easy to forget in the heat of competition just how much he is learning.

“This is actually loads of fun. I get up at five in the morning on Saturdays to do this,” he said.
He looked over at the somewhat battered team robot, noting with pride: “I wrote the code for that.”

Called FIRST Robotics, the all-day event on Sept. 21 convened 42 teams of Michigan high school students in a boisterous, intense, celebration of all things nerd. Later that day, a three-team alliance whooped with pride as it was named the winner.

But those behind the program say there is more at stake here than trophies or medals or even the result of a major college football game.

“We are in trouble as a nation,” said Bob Nichols, Kettering's director of alumni engagement. He was speaking to oft-cited evidence that Michigan and the United States lag behind many countries in science, technology, engineering and math – the cluster of subjects known as STEM.

 “We just don't have enough students going into STEM careers.”

In 2010 rankings from the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, 15-year-old U.S. students scored 17th in science achievement and 25th in math out of 34 countries. A 2009 report from National Assessment of Education Progress found that just 1 percent of U.S. fourth grade and 12th grade students and 2 percent of eighth grade students scored in the highest level of proficiency in science.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan called those findings “an absolute wake-up call for America.”

FIRST Robotics, Nichols believes, is one good way to begin to answer that call.

“I don't just think that it's true. I have proof of it. I have seen the transformation so many times,” Nichols said.

Since 1999, Kettering has awarded scholarships totaling $3.5 million to FIRST participants. Many have gone on distinguish themselves in fields like engineering and science, Nichols said.

 A 2005 study by Brandeis University underlined its promise.

In an analysis of 173 FIRST Robotics participants from New York City and Detroit area high schools, it found that 99 percent had graduated from high school and 89 percent went on to college. Nearly 90 percent took at least one college math course and 78 percent took at least one science course. About half took at least one engineering course.

Nearly 60 percent reported they had at least one science or technology-related work experience, while 13 percent received grants or scholarships related to science or engineering. Of those reporting a major, 41 percent selected engineering, compared to a national average of 6 percent.

Founded in 1989 by New Hampshire inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen, FIRST grew by 2011 to more than 2,000 teams from around the world. Competitions challenge teams, with the help of volunteer professional mentors, to solve a common problem in a six-week time frame using a standard parts kit and shared set of rules.

Aaron Stewart, 23, competed on a high school FIRST Robotics squad in southern Michigan in 2008 and 2009. He graduated from Notre Dame University in May with a degree in mechanical engineering and was recently hired as an engineer for Whirlpool.

“I definitely learned a lot,” Stewart said of his FIRST Robotics experience. He is now a mentor for the same team that sparked his interest in engineering.

“It's hands-on. You have a real-world problem to solve. You actually go through the details of working out a problem from start to finish.”

That kind of connection is more than coincidence, in the view of another FIRST Robotics advocate.

“We have a saying, 'We are the only varsity sport where everyone on the team can turn pro,'” said Gail Alpert, president of FIRST in Michigan, a nonprofit organization that aims to see FIRST Robotics teams at every high school in Michigan.

“If can we can make FIRST Robotics a sport that gives the prestige of football, then we are significantly changing the culture in the United States.”

 Given that he campaigned as “one tough nerd,” it is no surprise Gov. Rick Snyder backed his enthusiasm for this endeavor with $3 million in the 2014 school aid budget to expand FIRST Robotics in Michigan. About one-fourth of Michigan high schools have FIRST Robotics teams, a portion expected to rise in 2014.

Bryan Coburn, 23, earned his FIRST Robotics stripes a few years back while a student at Schwartz Creek High School. The experience taught him about electrical engineering, how to design and build a prototype – and how to attack a problem.

“Before that, I really had no experience with engineering,” he recalled.
He earned a scholarship to Kettering University, where he was student body president. Following his graduation in March, he was hired as a structural engineer for American Airlines.

Coburn doubts he would be where he is today had he not competed in FIRST Robotics.

“With FIRST, you are given a problem at the beginning and you have to develop some sort of way to approach that problem. It showed me how much I enjoyed that process.

“It showed me where my passion was,” he said.

DESIGN in the D Event (Squaring the Deck for DESIGN Thinking!)

Festival showcases city’s creativity with exhibits, lectures, theater,pop-up installations and more

   The Detroit Design Festival launches its third year this week, and director Matt Clayson thinks the world is quickly taking notice.
   “The festival continues this ongoing dialogue about Detroit being a center of good design and creativity,” he says.
   Organized by the Detroit Creative Corridor Center (DC3), the event will continue its mission of showcasing the city’s still-emerging design industry by offering more than 60 events, including mini-conferences, lectures, exhibitions, theater presentations, fashion shows, workshops and panel discussions.
   They’ll be held at venues all over town and most are free. Temporary studios and installations, often called pop-ups, are also a big part of this year’s lineup.
   According to Clayson, the festival celebrates the “gray area where design meets fine art. This is a forum to discuss what is design, what is art, and what does all of this look like in relation to the city.”
   The event launches tonight with a kickoff party from 6 to 10 p.m. at the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education at the College for Creative Studies (485 W. Milwaukee St.). Studio displays from local designers will be featured and entertainment will be provided by DJ Erno and the Inferno. Organizers promise lots of marketing and networking opportunities for artists, designers and aspiring designers.

   Exhibit
   “Nothingtoseeness: The Visual Art of John Cage” consists of drawings, watercolors and prints by avant-garde artist, composer and writer John Cage (1912-92). The works are being seen in Detroit for the first time and will be accompanied, in the words of organizers, by “a Cagean chance-derived score which will randomly alter the installation throughout the run of the exhibition.” (10 a.m.-5 p.m. today- Saturday, Center Galleries, Manoogian Visual Resource Center, College for Creative Center, 301 Frederick Douglass)
   Installation
   Giant balloon trees that soar high above expected crowds will be the centerpiece of Citypark, a pop-up park near the site of the old Hudson’s store in downtown Detroit. It’s the creation of John Skidmore Studio. (Opening reception, 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, 1206 Woodward)
   Film
   “The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller,” a film about celebrated architect, inventor and futurist Fuller (1895-1983), will include live narration by Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Sam Green (“The Weather Underground”) and a performance of the film’s score by veteran indie rock band Yo La Tengo. (7 and 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Detroit Film Theatre, Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward. Both screenings are sold out.)
   Nighttime fun
   Thirty creative enterprises — everything from restaurants to gal leries — will showcase their offerings during Eastern Market After Dark. A free shuttle will be available to help guests navigate the 24-acre farmers market just east of downtown. (7-11 p.m. Thursday)

   Transportation design students from the Center for Creative Studies had aerodynamics in mind when they fabricated vehicles for Friday’s Cable Car Race. The cable cars, made of foam rubber, will be raced on descending cables in a school parking structure. Speed and overall design will determine the winners. (4:15 p.m. Friday, Ford Campus Parking Structure, fourth floor, 201 E. Kirby Road)
   Shopping
   Entrepreneurs, artists and designers have joined to transform parts of Livernois Avenue into the Avenue of Fashion that it once was. Friday’s Light Up Livernois will feature eight hours of art, shopping and entertainment at pop-up storefronts set up by creative types from Detroit and elsewhere. (3-11 p.m Friday, Livernois Avenue between 7 Mile and 8 Mile)
   Theater
   New company Fratellanza sets out to turn theater on its head with “String Up the Moon,” a mashup of absurdist theater and commedia dell’arte that employs music, dance and acrobatics. The play is based on works by two celebrated Russians: “Diary of a Madman,” an 1835 story by Nikolai Gogol, and “Mozart and Salieri,” an 1832 play by Alexander Pushkin. (7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jam Handy building, 2900 E. Grand Blvd. $15, $5 for playgoers under 30. The show will be followed by a Russian tea.) Biking
   The cycling enthusiasts at Detroit Bike City, the group that sponsors weekly bike rides through Detroit that it calls Slow Rolls, are getting in on the DDF fun. Saturday evening’s Slow Roll: Special Edition will take participants on a tour of key festival locations. Stops include Midtown, Corktown and Grand River Avenue. TECHONOMY 2013 (Squaring the Circle!)

Co-founder of Twitter to speak at Techonomy

   Some of the nation’s top high-tech leaders will visit Detroit today for Techonomy, a daylong examination of how technology and innovation can help improve economic growth and urban revival.
   Headlining the conference will be Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Square, a digital payment service, who spoke last year.
   Also speaking will be Gov. Rick Snyder and Dan Gilbert, the founder and chairman of Quicken Loans.
   This year’s Techonomy, the second annual in Detroit, will be held at Wayne State University. It will focus on the national lack of educational opportunities.
