GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Students interested in careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) will have a chance to explore those opportunities on April 16 at the second annual “What is an Engineer?” demonstration.

“There are great paying careers available in the STEM fields and this event is designed to show West Michigan students why they should give them a try,” said Armen Oumedian, a retired Grand Rapids businessman and one of the event’s organizers.

“There are new opportunities coming to our region and it’s our job to make sure the trained workforce is there when they arrive in West Michigan.”

The program, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Aquinas College’s Wege Center, will feature a panel of young engineers who are students or graduates at Kettering University, a Flint-based institution formerly known as General Motors Institute and GMI Engineering and Management Institute.

The event, which also will feature live and hands-on demonstrations, is being hosted by Kettering University, Aquinas College and West Michigan Catholic Schools. Cost for the event is $5 per student.

“Our goal is to interest these kids while their minds are curious and open to possibilities,” said Oumedian, a 1949 Kettering University graduate. “We want their parents to understand that after graduation, engineers can earn $70,000 a year with plenty of room for career advancement.”

The event’s keynote speaker will be Patrick Anderson, a professor of Mechanical Engineering and co-advisor to the pre-med education at Kettering.
Participants will see exhibits that demonstrate biomedicine, chemical engineering, mechatronics and electrical engineering.

Students from West Catholic High School will be on hand with two demonstrations from their robotics team.

Door prizes will include a Kindle Fire electronic reader, several remote controlled helicopters and Lego kits.

Attendees must register and send $5 by April 9 to the Foundation for Catholic Secondary Education, Att: Michael Wolfston/What is an Engineer, 360 S. Division Avenue, Grand Rapids, MI. 49503
